But Midnight wine is very definitely in the same world as the Nightside... They mentioned Jessica Sorrow...

Not just that, in For Heaven's Eyes only of the Secret Histories series (I think it was this book at least) Molly tells Eddie about her and Isabella visiting the town form Drinking Midnight wine and speak with one of the characters from that book.

Not to mention that Leo Mourn makes a short appearance in Agents from Light and Darkness in the Nightside series and in The Spy Who Haunted Me in the Secret Histories series.

And then there's Gayle of course, who reappears in that guise in A Hard Day's Knight, which is also part of the Nightside series.

Midnight Wine is (like Shadow's Fall) linked to all the other books.

My issue with the Nightside stuff is a general dislike of the 'private detective' genre. (Similarly, I am not a huge fan of Bond.)

Besides, I spent my teen aged years in Bradford on Avon (and still go there regularly.)

Well, John Taylor of the Nightside is not an ordinary PI :-) But Drinking Midnight Wine is really special.

'Special' PIs have been done to death, too...

They are not as special as John, mind you ;)

How many other detectives use pepper as a weapon, or keep a piece of unicorn horn with a snotty attitude pinned to the inside of their lapel after all, or are adopted by a teenage runaway they were hired to find in a previous case who takes over as their secretary and runs the business better than they could ever hope for? Plus, one of his rules is to never go after the Maltese Falcon...

To me the appeal of the Nightside isn't so much the "detective story" as the character. I find John fascinating, and all the people (and not-people) he encounters full of color. Great stuff, some of the best on the market.

There is a reason why I have read the Nightside and not other stories in the same genre.
