Interesting development with Kim possessing the ability to glow. Wonder if we'll ever find out what let her and JC do it? It's also nice to see a bigger mythology starting, but I must say, I'd love to find that the traitor in the Carnacki institute happened to be of the same faction as the one in the Droods. That'd be some nice arc-welding.

Speaking of glowing, the ability to See (capital letter important) really seems to be getting around. The Droods have got it, it's John Taylor's main weapon, and now JC seems to have picked the talent up. Is it something almost necessary for this sort of series? Harry Dresden has an almost identical power. Maybe it just gets handed out with the long coat to each magic detective!

I think Seeing is fairly standard in most fantasy works to be honest.

The concept that the world isn't the way most people see it is wide ranging.

There tend to be levels from just glimpsing the hidden (behind glammer or obscuring magic's) to Seeing the world as it truly is (like Mad Man in the Nightside) and either living with it because somehow you come to terms with it, or (more usually) going stark raving mad... There are things mere mortals are not meant to See. . .

I've used it more than once in novels, its a way of showing plot items (major or minor) you want to bring in later but need to foreshadow. Or just to have fun with the whole idea. . .

It'd be kind of odd to not be able to See (or be otherwise sensitive to the paranormal) in a book/story all about the paranormal world, don't you think?

It is not fortuitous that these people have these gifts. It is that a story about you or me would be less interesting:

Luc walked down the dark corridor, flashlight in hand. He had heard a strange noise in the abandoned asylum's East Wing and was determined to discover its source.
Turning a corner, light glinted up ahead and there was a sudden crashing sound.
"Bloody window's come loose." Luc scowled under his breath. "Must be the wind."

The end.

I am likely never to be able to look at fry up without laughing and spoiling people's appetite by telling them about that entire chapter.
Or at least not for the coming month.
Luckily for most of my friends, we don't really do fry ups in Belgium.

OMFG! I just finished the book and WOW.
I can't help but wonder if the new Outerworldly entity is somehow connected with the Heart or Ethel.
And I really wonder what or who the Rider is, he says they'd know him if he said his name, that sounds SO familiar because the dude that ran the Satanic Conspiracy (I can't remember his name, the government dude) was described like that by members of the Conspiracy. "You would know him if I said his name" is what the members all said, exept they couldn't say it because they were under a geas.

Oh man, I SO hope for a cross-over story between Secret Histories and Ghost Finders. Preferably with Hadleigh Oblivion thrown in the mix, he gets mentioned in both series after all.
Yes I admit, a Nightside/Secret Histories/Ghost Finders cross-over story would be the best thing ever when it comes to reading in my book :)

Philip MacAlpine did strike me as a low on the list choice when it came to the conspiracy leader.

Ok I have to ask - what's the deal with the cliff hanger endings suddenly? First John Taylor has a sword-shaped parcel in his post, then Eddie Drood isshot and dying, next Drood hall is the center of a disaster, and now Kim has gone missing. Heck, I'd even call the inevitable wedding of John and Suzie a cliffhanger, since something disastrous is sure to crash the party. Why the emotional roller coaster - I'm going to get the next book on its release day anyway, now I'm just tapping my foot impatiently in the mean time!
