I really like books by Hugh Ashton, he mainly writes alternative history (WW2 era) and Sherlock Holmes stores (Tales of the Deedbox and it's two follow-ups) in the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (seriously well done).

I've read all of his Deedbox novels and then one of his alternative history ones (Red Wheels Turning) and I appreciated them a lot. And generally I don't even like WW2 era stuff so 'nuff said really :)
