There are too many people waiting for the movie (many are more interested in the sequel, to be fair) for it to not make a lot of money at the box office.

Of course, it can be argued that revenue is not the only way of judging the success of a film.

Yes, The Transformers are the living proof of this :? But I am not snobbish either - I can't say that a movie is bad only because many people like it...

I wouldn't say it is whether people like it or not.

With adaptions, I would say it is at least partly about how true they remain to the source material. (In this regard, I would say that LotR fails heinously.)

LotR is pretty faithful, you know. Compared to other adaptations. :?

I know, but I have a couple small but significant gripes:

Glorfindel is/was my favourite character.

Can't stand Arwen.

The Witch King of Angmar is killed because of the dagger Meriadoc was given by Tom Bombadil (salvaged from the Barrow Wights, it was actually a relic of Arnor that held enchantments lethal to the leader of the Nazgul.)

I am with you here! I was mad when I saw the change! It was made in order to appeal to ridiculous teenage boys who have fetish or female fighters :x

I think it was mostly just an excuse to give Arwen more screen time so that women would be interested in an extraneous romantic sub-plot. Because, apparently, women can't appreciate any movie without such crap. :x

And sadly that's actually largely true. I can watch a movie without romance and like it, but sadly the vast majority of my female friends can't.
I think LotR would have been fine without the romance personally.

I am not against romance, but I hate when it came at the expense of one of the most impressive characters Tolkien has created. :(

LotR would have been better without the romance crap.

Unfortunately, I think they are going to screw up with the net two movies. Again. Watch for the introduction of an invented female character. Just for 'chick-appeal'. :x

Chick appeal sucks. Even the kind of girl that goes to this movie agrees to this. It's ridiculous to shove in these things just so girlfriends not into it that are dragged along by their boyfriends will whinge less. They're not likely to enjoy it anyway, there's no use trying to placate them X_x
