Well, unsurprising they took a bit of a detour from the book.
Surprisingly enough the detour is spectacularly MASSIVE.
It's actually interesting to see how they redevelopped some of the characters, but I'm not entirely sure I actually like the show. It's alright and all, but it's far from spectacular.
That aside it's entertaining enough to watch, so for now I'll keep up with it.
Even though I think that I'm mainly amused by it thanks to this series Renfield, who is absolutely BRILLIANT.
Dracula just deserves to be slapped for so many reasons.

And can someone please explain to me what the deal is with vampires and being such messy eaters? Surely it'd be more practical for many reaons NOT to chew your victim's throat out and spilling blood all over the place/yourself?
I keep on thinking they're all pulling a Count Carnage (at least that what I'd imagine Count Carnage does judging on his description).

I *HATE* modern 'vampires'.

Give me the bestial monsters of folklore, any day.

I developed a phrase that sums up the modern 'vampire':

Just because a doughnut has a hole, doesn't mean I want to fuck it.

Why are vampires messy eaters? Because red looks good on the screen. They are supposed to be the ultimate apex predator, why would they eat like a baby?

Because not leaving victims about with their throat gnawed out doesn't quite alarm hunters to their presence. And not wandering around town with half of your face and your collar soaked in blood also helps to avoid unwanted attention to your nature.
Probably too much logic involving that one.

I'm not automatically going to hate on modern vampire stories, some are good (I still love Moonlight), some are FAIL (Twilight, just say no).

Just watched the pilot of this!!!

I can see what you mean, a Whole new take.

I'm intrigued enough to watch one or two more just to see where the hell it goes.

As for the whole messy eating thing. I always thought that as the 'Apex predator', they don't give a damn what mere human's think...

And the not caring is what bands the humans together in a situation that ends in carnage of either a whole lot of humans or dead apex predator.

To be fair, I've seen nearly all episodes of the series and I have to admit I have little clue of where they're going with it. Hopeless romantic that I am I kindda hope that this time the vampire DOES get the girl.
But quite possibly because I find Dracula much less annoying than Harker.
Harker's an obnoxious tit.

Renfield is definitely my favourite character :)
