Following an email I sent asking if there was any chance of a book covering the first empire (Arthur Deerstalker, Dram etc) I received a reply saying yes this had been discussed but the publisher doesn't want any more Deathstalker books 'of any description' so I guess that's that then. It's a real shame as I've always either the first Empire would have made a fantastic story with all the early tales of Jack Random and early forbidden high tech etc, and it sounds like it was considered, but the publisher nixed it :(

I do like the way publishers know what fans want better than the fans themselves.

Apparently.

They base this 'insight' on the sales figures of the last few books of the series.

The time scale of when the last book was released or the content of the new one's don't figure in their numbers...

Very sad that they have such enormous influence on what an author is doing. "Deathstalker" is probably the most epic series I have ever read and I have never discovered another space saga of the same magnitude.

I know their reasoning. I simply disagree with it.

Much like the film industry has test audiences, they should do limited runs on extended synopses to a test fan-base.

But that'd make sense (and cost money), so that will never happen. I guess that is one reason why we are seeing more people self publish online.

Deathstalker is pretty much the only 'space opera' I have in my collection. Most of my books are either traditional fantasy (think Robin Hobb) or non-fiction (plenty of folklore, though.)

Luc, I have read many "Star Wars" books and a few "Warhammer" ones, but it's not the same. There is no space opera like "Deathstalker".

I have to admit to not really knowing much about the term 'space opera'.

As far as I'm concerned, Deathstalker is Science Fantasy. (futuristic universe featuring fantastical themes.)

I think we all disagree with it.

As I've said before, if you're in the US and feel there should be more Deathstalker write to Roc/Tor and ask them to commission more...

How about writing to Solaris (since I am in England)?

Solaris no longer publisher Simon. At the moment he has no UK publisher.

And they don't do the buying, they simply republished what Roc/Tor did in the US. It was they that bought the books and the contracts aren't with them Solaris merely acted as the UK (re)publisher.

The only people that can buy more are Roc/Tor as they have the rights to buy more (even if they don't want to, while they do, no one else can).

As they're in the US, they're not interested in what people in the UK want as (apart from imports which don't figure in their numbers) we don't buy their books.

(isn't the world of publishing great!)
