I seem to have picked up Ghostworld (thinking it was Ghost Finders!) without having read any other Deathstalker books.

Is it a read-alone or shall I put it on the shelf for now, and if so what do I need to read first?

You're in luck that it's one of the prelude novels for the Deathstalker series so you can definitely read it without knowing anything else and enjoy it. In fact it's far more enjoyable to read the Deathstalker series after the prelude books since Simon does drop a few nudge-nudge-wink-winks in there about them.

Would it help if I read mistworld or any of the others first too?

Those three can be read in any order. I read Mistworld many years after I read the other two and it was fine. If I was to rank them in order of overlap with the main Deathstalker series then it would be:

Mistworld
Ghostworld
Hellworld.

You're good to read them in any order though.

excellent! I have one or two coughcoughcough other books to get through first, but I'll not specifically delay it.

Ghostworld was the second SRG book I ever read (after Blood and Honour).

It is an excellent book, one of my all time favourite stories, as well as introducing one of the greatest characters of all time, for me.

I won't spoilerise it, but I will say that Simon was really on form when he wrote that one. (I still think that the Deathstalker epic blows the Taylor/Drood works out of the water.)

I think it was my first. Then I read Shadow Falls while I was waiting for Deathstalker War to be released. As books the two have a special place in my heart (as does the series) and I love the emotional undertones in Ghostworld, especially between Silence and Carrion. The entire base scene once Carrion gets involved has to be some of the smoothest and enjoyable writing I've ever read.

"Captain, why do you call him Odin?"
"He only has one eye".
